No Reason To Smile

Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, I understand why you don’t smile
In your heart there has been hurt all the while
Pain hiding behind your magnificent eyes
I recognized it, I was not surprised

Your pain, your shame, and your regret
Well, Mona, there is no need to fret
Your heart will go on through each and every trial
I’ve been through this too, for a while

It can be seen in your forced smile or in the pain behind your eyes
I never understood how you went so long before someone realized
So clearly obvious is your discomfort and your sadness
I can see it though, I know you are in distress

The whole world speculates and agrees you are filled with glee
However I know, I know that is incorrect, because I relate to thee
Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, I understand why you don’t smile
In your heart there has been hurt all the while

December Walk

The solemnity and coldness of this day
Touches my heart in an unimaginable way
The beauty of the winter air
Gives me the love that I wish to declare

The crisp clean snowflakes fall gently from the sky
Falling on my cheeks like tears I did not cry
Teaching me lessons about the way life can be
Letting me know that it’s possible to be free

With this newfound support that I’m given by the snow
I know there is a place for me- I just know
That behind the glaze of  ice
It happened due to the way God rolled his dice

If not for this walk along a broken winter road
Life would not once again upon me be bestowed
The snow, the ice, and air will be remembered
All because I took a walk on a beautiful night in December

For Margaret Isobel French; Daisy

For Margaret Isobel French

For my great grandmother, Daisy
Who taught me what beauty is and how it is obtained
Who taught me how to be strong
And what’s right and wrong

She was always the one I could look up to
With her grace and generosity
She was beautiful and fortunate
And always so affectionate

A living role model
She has strength beyond compare
And knows just when to quit
She has a lot of wit

Whenever I see her I am reminded
Of the ways she saw life
And the lessons she taught me
In hopes that one day I could believe

My beautiful great grandmother taught me so much
And was my inspiration to keep going
So I decided to write this rhyme
For all the lessons she taught me in my time

Once upon a time-

Once upon a time, thoughts of happiness filled her brain and heart
Until suicidal thoughts pierced through her like a dart
She once loved herself and everyone
Then hated everyone under the sun
She once was a flirt
Until she was overcome by pain and hurt
Now she spends her days in a lonely haze
Though not for lack of trying
Much of her time is now spent crying,
And inside, dying
For each teardrop cried
There is a crimson one that falls from her veins
One that only causes her more pain
She misses the girl she once was
And hates who she has become
To put her life simply,
I am not the girl that I used to be..

Dreams

As children we are told who and what we can be
We are told what we can achieve
The adults tell us we can be-
Be an astronaut or a sailor on the sea

They enable our minds, yes,
We are told to try and that we will be blessed
Adults refuse to tell us about the stress
And that our hearts will more than once beat loudly in our chests

We are never told about the unavoidable pain
Or that the occasional day might be mundane
They forget to tell us of the strain
Yet they tell us that we won’t get anywhere without using our brain

As children we are told who and what we can be
We are told what we can achieve
The adults tell us we can be-
Be an astronaut or a sailor on the sea

There’s a catch to this you’ll see
The adults never tell you who you never want to be
A person fearing an unthinkable jubilee
A child that continually tries to clean up the debris

We grow up knowing that we can
And fail- left without a back up plan
Left to look back to where life began
All we know is that we can’t

As children we are told who and what we can be
We are told what we can achieve
The adults tell us we can be-
Be an astronaut or a sailor on the sea
